“If we conceal our wounds out of fear and shame, our inner darkness can neither be illuminated nor become a light for others.”
–Brennan Manning, Abba’s Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging
Patty Roosevelt, LCPC/LPC, NCC is the therapist at DARE TO HOPE COUNSELING. Patty is licensed as a professional counselor in both the state of Illinois (LCPC) and the state of Missouri (LPC). She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). You’ll find that she is passionate about counseling children, adults and families. Counseling from a person-centered approach, she integrates the strengths of many interventions and models that have been proven through research to be effective in bringing greater levels of healing to those suffering from depression, anxiety, relational difficulties and traumatic histories. Patty realizes the courage it takes to enter into counseling, and she considers it an honor when others share their pain and struggle with her in order to take the first steps toward hope and healing.
Specializing in the treatment of trauma and attachment issues, Patty is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), an intervention that is proven to be effective in the treatment of PTSD and trauma of all kinds. EMDR can also be effective in the treatment of issues that can contribute to symptoms of anxiety and depression and other mental health issues. She is also trained in a newer intervention related to EMDR, the FLASH technique, a technique that brings the powerful, healing aspects of EMDR to those who may not be able to tolerate reliving traumatic experiences, even for a few moments (See the “About EMDR” page.)
Internal Family Systems (IFS), more specifically Janina Fisher’s Structural Dissociation Model, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are other models that Patty integrates into her counseling treatment. Treatment plans are created to meet the client’s individual needs and are made in collaboration with Patty’s clients.
Similarly, Patty uses specialized training to treat children and adults who struggle with issues of attachment. Trained in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), she has completed the full training to become a TBRI Practitioner with the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University. This training is particularly helpful in giving parents strategies to create stronger connection with children struggling to adapt to foster and adoptive situations, but is also helpful for parents who need strategies to help in parenting their biological children.
PATTY WILL OFTEN COMBINE HER KNOWLEDGE OF THESE MODELS TO ENHANCE THE STRENGTH OF EACH MODEL. For example, she might use the resourcing component of EMDR to enhance work with “parts” in Internal Family Systems or with Fisher’s model. She often combines her knowledge of TBRI and EMDR to enhance the strengths of each these models as well. (See the “About TBRI” page.)
Patty counsels clients from a Christian worldview when counseling those of a like-minded faith. Understanding the biblical example is not one of forcing a belief in Christianity upon anyone, she is respectful of the beliefs of those who do not desire to live as Christ-followers.
Other Affiliations–
Patty attends and helps to plan networking events with other therapists in the Monroe County, Illinois area. Her desire is that a greater spirit of cooperation may be created among the therapists in private practice and that therapists may learn one another’s particular areas of strength and passion in order that more appropriate referrals may be made for the benefit of all those who seek counseling services in the area.
From 2014-2020 Patty was employed by CrossRoads Counseling Centers, a not-for-profit counseling agency in St. Louis, MO. In 2021 Patty decided that it was time to devote her full attention to her private practice in Columbia, IL, though she continues to hold strong personal and professional relationships with CrossRoads’ therapists. These relationships provide opportunities for consultation and personal support and help her to provide better clinical care to her clients in Illinois.
An alum of Covenant Theological Seminary she is included in the networking efforts of the seminary. She is regularly informed of area trainings and other information relevant to CTS alumni through frequent e-mail blasts. This helps Patty to remain connected to other therapists in the area who hold similar counseling philosophies and to stay on top of the latest research and related training opportunities.
Patty’s Life Experiences and Education–
Growing up in southeastern Illinois as a farmer’s daughter, Patty has an understanding of the unique culture of agricultural families and communities. Always having a passion to work with children, she was an early childhood educator for several years and has experience teaching in both mainstream and special education classrooms. She also has a grandson with a moderately severe form of autism. These experiences have given Patty an understanding of sensory issues, varying ability levels and behavioral issues that can be extremely helpful in counseling children and in sharing strategies with parents in difficult parenting situations.
Patty graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. Later she gained certification in Early Childhood Education and specialized approval to teach Early Childhood Special Education. She has taught in both public and private schools, in Monroe, St. Clair, Wabash and Lawrence counties in Illinois.
In 2012 she retired from teaching in order to complete her Masters of Arts in Counseling at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. She graduated in May of 2014. Since that time she has continued to increase and improve her counseling skills through professional trainings, such as those mentioned above, collaboration with other therapists, and continued study and research on evidence-based interventions and models.
